Archie Clark was a Montana newspaperman who was interested in theatre companies and actors that performed in early western mining camps. This collection (1936-1982) consists of correspondence, writings, the family history of the actor John S. Langrische, clippings, and miscellany. (SC 1277) This collection consists of correspondence (1936-1982) concerning Archie Clark's research on the theatre in the American frontier, regarding the publication of his manuscripts, and other topics. Correspondents include actress Lillian Gish, author Joseph Kinsey Howard, newsman Charles Kuralt, and Senator John Melcher. Clippings include photo prints of photos, programs and articles from the second half of the 1800s concerning performers Julia Dean, Katie Putnam, Selden Irwin, and Charles and Eliza Couldock. The collection also includes Clark's research notes (1940, n.d.) on actor John S. Langrishe; writings (n.d.) including "Troupers of the Rockies and the Black Hills," "Stars over the Rockies: The Mining Camp Players," "The Montana Theatre in Stagecoach Days," and miscellaneous pieces on the frontier theatre; and clippings written by and about Clark.

Archie Leslie Clark was born in Butte, Montana, on August 23, 1896, the youngest of 8 children of William A. and Anna Clark. As a young man he went to work for the Montana Standard newspaper. He was city editor for the Butte Miner during the 1920s, and a reporter for the Great Falls Tribune from about 1937 to about 1960. For many years Clark researched the history of various theatre troups and the actors and actresses who travelled the western United States during the second half of the nineteen...
